Viable Action has its roots deep in the land of Chief Musikavanhu, in a small village called Mwanyisa, Chipinge Manicaland, Ward 24. The organization came to be as a solution to a heated conflict, about ownership of a productive field in the village. It was one of the few fields left in the village that still brought good yields. Most of the other fields produced crops that were moisture-stressed. Everyone was searching for better soils, opening up new fields now and then, and the field in question was now the field everyone wanted to access, own, and control, seeing the owner had left for the cities, leaving it to anyone in particular. The conflict almost turned physical, until the community leaders had to intervene, and during the discussions that followed, it was agreed that the community had contributed to the situation by not dealing with the loss of soil, extensive cutting down of trees, and veld fires. They were reminded that the land was no longer giving back to them because the people themselves were only taking from it. They were cutting down trees with no remorse, planting the same crop on the same land, year after year, without enriching the land.
